How To Impress Your New Team (In Less Than 2 Weeks)

Starting a new job is an exciting prospect, but it can also feel a little daunting.

You may be worried about familiarising yourself with new systems, meeting different clients, and most importantly, making a good impression on your new team.

Fortunately, by following a few simple tips, you can ensure that you quickly impress your new co-workers and slot seamlessly into the team structure.

Let’s take a look at how you can hit the ground running in a new role and inspire confidence in your colleagues - in less than 2 weeks.

1. Arrive on time

This may seem like a simple piece of advice, but it should never be overlooked.

Punctuality says a lot about your enthusiasm for a role and your commitment to a new team, so make sure that you’re consistently arriving on time.

Lateness won’t just reflect badly on you, but it will also mean that you miss out on crucial opportunities to chat with co-workers and prepare for daily tasks with your team. Set an early alarm, show up on time, and give yourself the best chance of impressing your colleagues.

2. Ask plenty of questions

It’s normal to be nervous when you’re joining a new company, but don’t let nerves stop you from asking questions.

Asking smart questions is a great way to understand the ins and outs of a new business, but it will also show your new team that you’re willing to learn. You might ask about specific team challenges, upcoming meetings, internal systems, or anything else you’re curious to know.

Just remember to listen carefully to the answers, and if needed, take notes to remember the key details! The more questions you ask, the faster you’ll learn the ropes, pick up new skills, and impress your colleagues.

3. Introduce yourself (and remember names)

Always make an effort to introduce yourself to your immediate teammates and co-workers in other departments. Although you’ll probably be shown around by a manager or office buddy, it’s always a good idea to get your face out there and say hello.

On top of this, try to remember as many names as possible when you’re introducing yourself.

It’s very easy to forget names when you’re busy trying to settle into a new role, but if you can commit them to memory, it will show that you’re actively listening and engaged with your new colleagues.

Making a good first impression on team members and quickly building positive working relationships is a surefire way to impress.

4. Be as proactive as possible

Being proactive and enthusiastic is key if you want to impress your new team in the first 2 weeks of a new role.

Always be on the lookout for opportunities to support team members and tackle new responsibilities. This will be easier for more experienced hires than junior starters, but it’s a good mindset for workers of all levels to have.

If you can show a genuine willingness to learn and throw yourself into new projects, you’ll immediately establish yourself as a valuable member of a team.

5. Don’t hesitate to share ideas

It’s completely normal to feel slightly anxious after joining a new company, and you might feel more comfortable staying quiet during the first few meetings or team calls.

However, if you have a good idea to share during a conversation or a practical suggestion for an upcoming project, don’t be afraid to share it. Your experience is highly valuable for an employer, and they’ve hired you for a reason, so don’t hesitate to prove your worth!

After this first contribution to a team discussion, it will become much easier to voice your opinions in future meetings, so don’t overthink it.

If you can follow these tips and approach a new job with a positive mindset, you’ll be impressing your co-workers and building your reputation before you know it.
